The Invisible Hand of Mathematics

Chair: Dr Ron Sandland, CSIRO Division of Mathematics and Statistics.

Biographical note: Ron graduated from the University of Sydney and joined CSIRO's (then) Division of Mathematics and Statistics in 1969, first in Canberra, then Brisbane. He gained actuarial qualifications before returning to Sydney in 1975 to complete a PhD at UNSW. Ron's interests have been mainly in applying statistics to solve challenging real problems in areas as diverse as `growth of organisms', analysis of `mark-recapture' experiments, ore-reserve estimation and quality-improvement. He was appointed Chief of the CSIRO Division of Mathematics and Statistics in 1988 and served as President of the Statistical Society of Australia from 1993 to 1995.
