Mathematical Sciences Research and its Links

Chair: Professor Cheryl Praeger, University of Western Australia.



Biographical note: Cheryl took her first degree at the The University of Queensland in 1970, and then went to Oxford on a Commonwealth Scholarship, graduating with a DPhil in Mathematics in 1974. This was followed by two years as a Research Fellow in Mathematics at the ANU, then a half-year on a visiting appointment at University of Virginia. In 1976 Cheryl accepted an appointment as Lecturer at the University of Western Australia, where she was subsequently appointed Professor of Mathematics in 1983. Her main research interests are in Algebra and Combinatorial Mathematics, especially in Permutation Groups and Computational Group Theory. During 1994-95 Cheryl was Chair of the Advisory Council for the ``Strategic Review of Mathematical Sciences Research and Advanced Mathematical Services in Australia''. Earlier, in 1989-92, she had been a core member of the Prime Minister's Science and Engineering Council, while in 1992-94 she was President of the Australian Mathematical Society.
